What is happening in Afghanistan is nothing less than a systematic attack on women’s human rights. Under the Taliban’s rule, women and girls are being erased from public life.

Contributions to Afghan Women & Afghanistan:
Dr Hannah Neumann is a leading voice in the European Parliament for a feminist foreign policy. Her advocacy for Afghan women’s rights is part of her commitment to defending human rights and promoting security in authoritarian and conflict-affected regions. She firmly believes that women's rights are non-negotiable, regardless of geography or regime.
According to the United Nations, over 80% of Afghan women and girls have effectively been excluded from public life since the Taliban takeover. Dr Neumann continues to highlight this systemic erasure in parliamentary debates, demanding that the EU respond with determination and urgency.
Advocacy in the European Parliament: In September, Neumann initiated a debate in the European Parliament addressing the deteriorating situation of women in Afghanistan following the Taliban's enforcement of the "Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" law. She emphasized the urgency of supporting Afghan women and condemned the systemic oppression they face. Hannah Neumann+2Hannah Neumann+2Hannah Neumann+2

Dr Neumann has visited Afghanistan multiple times since the Taliban takeover to get an impression of the situation on the ground by engaging with civil society organisations. Read the reports from her visit in 2022 here and 2023 here.
Beyond her parliamentary work, Dr Neumann actively engages with Afghan women’s rights defenders in exile. She organises public hearings, film screenings and strategic dialogues in the European Parliament, amplifying the voices of those directly affected by Taliban oppression.
