Emma Cherniavsky , CEO of UNHCR
Emma Cherniavsky

In this role, Emma leads the team to deliver all UK private sector partnership and engagement activities in support of UNHCR’s global relief programmes. This includes national fundraising appeals, corporate and foundation partnerships, and public solidarity campaigns.
During Emma’s tenure and thanks to the generosity of the charity’s partners and donors, UK for UNHCR has funded over £ 100 million of relief for refugees and displaced people, including emergency protection, cash assistance, shelter, healthcare, education, and livelihoods. This directly supports people displaced by conflicts in areas including Ukraine, Syria, Sudan, and Yemen, as well as ongoing humanitarian crises such as Afghanistan, Myanmar and the Horn of Africa. The charity also operates an Emergency Fund to help UNHCR respond globally, wherever the need is greatest.

As well as mobilising private sector support across the UK, Emma visits UNHCR programmes to meet directly with displaced families, learning more about their lives and experiences, and how UK for UNHCR can support their future needs and aspirations. She has met with refugees and UNHCR operations in Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Kenya, Jordan, and Lebanon.

Emma regularly speaks about the charity’s work and the refugee cause at conferences, events, and in national media, alongside refugees who share their personal stories to raise public awareness. She has spoken at numerous conferences and events on topics such as refugee inclusion, humanitarian finance, and philanthropy, and has provided expert commentary in major media outlets including Sky News, ITV, Times Radio and regional channels such as London Live and BBC Radio Scotland. She also speaks regularly about the UK for UNHCR’s public engagement campaigns, such as CONGREGATION, an installation by Es Devlin, which featured portraits and stories of 50 refugees who have made London their home.

Emma has also written commentary for the independent.co.uk and Huffington Post, as well as on LinkedIn, where her insights from field visits, the impact of philanthropy on the lives of refugees, and her perspectives on leadership have made her a Top Voice.

In December 2023, she represented the UK for UNHCR at the United Nations Global Refugee Forum in Geneva.
With over 20 years of experience in fundraising and senior leadership across the non-profit and political sectors, Emma previously held key roles within the Liberal Democrats, the International Crisis Group, and Human Rights Watch.
