Born in 1975 in the Kuf Ab district of Badakhshan province, she comes from a large and politically active family.
Ms. Koofi is a well-known advocate for women's rights in Afghanistan and has played an active role in passing supportive laws for women and children, including the law against violence against women in Afghanistan.
Fawzia Koofi holds bachelor's degrees in law and political science, as well as in commerce management, and two master's degrees in commerce management and international relations. She was the first educated daughter in her family and also the first female political figure in Afghanistan.
